Seagull Coastline S12 Cedar QI Guitar – Superior Construction

The Seagull Coastline S12 is a 12-String acoustic-electric dreadnought guitar with rich, full sound that only a quality 12-string guitar can produce. With a warm mid-range tone and of course, the award winning craftsmanship and value for which Seagull is known, the S12 features an ultra thin semi-gloss finish, a select pressure tested solid cedar top, and built-in Godin QI electronics that let you hit the stage fully loaded for any venue.

Coastline Cedar 12 String

Twelve string guitars must endure a great deal of added stress on the neck. The Seagull neck design offers superior stability, even on the twelve string models tuned to concert pitch. The straight string pull of the tapered Seagull headstock is an especially big advantage when it comes to tuning a twelve string guitar and keeping it in tune.

Coastline Series

The guitars that make up the Seagull Coastline series represent one of the world's outstanding values in acoustic guitars. The back and sides of the Coastline series models are made from a three-layer lamination of Wild Cherry wood. With a sound that lands somewhere between the mellow tone of a Mahogany guitar and the bright sound of Maple, Wild Cherry has proven itself to be an excellent tone wood. Grown locally, Wild Cherry is also an ecologically friendly choice. Coastline series guitars feature very smooth necks made from Silver Leaf Maple.

Godin QI Electronics

The Godin EPM Quantum acoustic guitar system is simple in design and outstanding in performance. This single source system features an exceptionally responsive saddle transducer carefully matched to side mount electronics with rotary volume, bass, and treble controls. The electronics and controls are packaged in a small and easy to use format complemented with a finely crafted pewter cover plate. In combination with the transducer, the EQ control range and frequency content have been specifically contoured to provide a very rich and full sound reproduction resulting in performance seen only in far more complex systems.

A History of Quality

In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and beautiful finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. Of course there is much more to a great guitar than a solid top with a special finish, so we produced this illustrated guide to help you gain some understanding of the basic elements of a great sounding acoustic guitar.

The Seagull story wouldn't be complete without mentioning La Patrie. La Patrie is a small village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This is where the first Seagulls were made in the early eighties. Today, La Patrie has a population of about 475 and about half of these people are guitar builders. These folks take a great deal of pride in the guitars they build. Pick one up and you'll see why.

Summary: WAY better than the price might suggest 2010-09-04
Comment: I wanted a reasonably priced 12 string with decent electronics but didn't want the predictable cheap Chinese variants from so many of the other more mainstream brands. I have a Godin xtSA electric/piezo/synth (same company as Seagull) that I love way more than I ever expected given the reasonable cost and decided to give their acoustics a try. Whoa - what a truly wonderful guitar. I can't even explain the sound, but its up there with some very expensive 12 string models, and the electronics are more than adequate. Build quality is flawless and it actually feels like a well made premium instrument. I don't know how Seagull can keep making these in Canada and be competitive with the Asian factories, but they sure did figure it out. Keep in mind that the neck is very chunky, and while it suits my average sized hands well enough after some getting used to, it may be too fat for some. It actually reminds me of the older high end Ovation 12 string necks, which were wide and fat with a little flat spot down the middle. Also, it IS a dreadnaught body style and it fits in a TKL 12 string dreadnaught case (make sure the case has enough length in the headstock area for all those extra tuning machines)! On a related note, a friend of mine just bought the S6 and it is in every way as good as this S12 and gives my much more expensive Japanese made Takamine 6-string a serious run for the money.

Summary: Well worth the money 2010-09-01
Comment: Only gave it 4 stars because Ive only had it a short time. So far very satisfied and hope it becomes a 5 star after six or seven months of use. Under prime shipping I had the item the next day, with no tax and about 4.00 cost. Item was packed in a box within a box. Inner box slid around too much for my taste, and could have used more packing paper. I could find only one very small ding on the back of the guitar which probably was done at the factory. Does not come with a front strap pin and I installed one. It tuned easily and sounded very good especially with amp. Twelve strings takes a bit of getting used to. It looks an sounds great for the price. Its not a 3000.00 Gibson, but then again, I'm having fun and have and extra 2500.00 in my pocket. I recommend it.

Comment: This shipped very well,Great condition. The Guitar is built with CARE,It needed to be tuned after I unpacked it, but was no problem having the onboard tuner. Sound very nice,You'll have to get use to all the strings. The sound is worth the time spent learning!

Summary: Sweet 12 string at a nice price 2010-03-14
Comment: I have had this guitar for a whole seven hours and I'm already in love. I'm also in love with Amazon Prime. I ordered this yesterday at 11:43am and received it today at 11:10am. The $7 charge for Saturday delivery was well worth it. The guitar came set up nicely with low action out of the box. A few minutes of tuning and it's playing like a dream. Great tone played acoustically, plug it in and it's even better. I'm no expert so take this review as you will but I think this is an exceptional value for a North American handcrafted instrument.
