Product Review

Perhaps the most exquisite acoustic from Epiphone in over 40 years, the Masterbilt EF-500RA offers deep, lush Rosewood-body acoustic tone with an equally rich appearance with hand-inlaid Abalone tracing all the body binding. With increased fingerboard comfort from slightly wider string spacing for fingerstyle playing and vintage "V" neck profile for great leverage and control, this all-Solid wood, Solid-top acoustic features wide- X 30's style scalloped bracing design inside a smaller, "concert-size " Solid Rosewood body with a Solid Sitka Spruce top, Rosewood bridge and fingerboard, Bone nut, Bone saddle, Gold hardware. The Mahogany neck is set with hide-glue into a hand cut, hand-fit, solid, dovetail neck joint. The body finish is ultra-thin for maximum acoustic resonance and tone.

I tried this guitar out over the weekend, bought one, and it is an amazing instrument. I'm not given to impulse purchases this expensive, but it was love at first strum ;) As with all of the Masterbilt guitars, the quality is outstanding. I could not find a flaw anywhere on the instrument. The abalone inlays are generous, and I love the look. If you aren't into the decorations, the lower end models are the same but less ornate as far as I could tell from the specs. I have been playing fingerstyle for a couple of years, but this is the first fingerstyle guitar I have tried. What a difference! First off the neck, the V neck is very comfortable and makes barre chords much easier. For normal playing the V sits comfortable in the hand. The neck on this guitar is wider than a normal guitar, it doesn't take too much time to adjust. If you have bigger fingers this will be great, but my fingers are small and it's not a problem. Now on to the sound.. The instrument has a smaller body, which I...Read more

I've been playing out with this instrument for about 2 years now. I bought one on sale with a crack in the top, immediately got it repaired, and it is now my number one guitar for fingerstyle and folk playing. The quality and projection of the tone is incredible for a guitar with the 000 body style. I've also installed a Bband pickup and couldn't be happier. I highly recommend this instrument over a cheaper model in the martin/taylor category. In my experience with epiphone acoustics, this one is by far the best, acoustically and aesthetically.

4.0 out of 5 stars EF-500RA Epiphone Masterbilt Guitar V neck, March 27, 2010

I just obtained this guitar in March of 2010 and wonder if the 'soft V neck' has been changed, because mine just seems like a regular neck, more like what's called a 'C' shape.

I LOVE the guitar and the abalone inlay and the sound is wonderful... but I expected a pronounced V shaped neck to better fill my fretting hand and it doesn't have what I expected
in that area. The neck seems like any other to me. I used a tape measure and it seems to be same or very near size as my other guitars 11.8 cm to 12.0 cm circumference at 1st fret.
No significant difference.

The nut width is 1 3/4" so it's not all that much bigger than a normal 1 11/16" - but 1/16" I suppose is better extra width for finger picking.

I'll still keep and play and love it, but I'll use a strap for sure because the neck is so smooth and rounded it would be difficult to hold without a firm grip.

If anyone knows about a change in the neck design, please post about it -...Read more
