I saw several reviews for different variations of this same guitar and they didn't have the most possitive reviews. Well I didn't listen to them and realized what I got was a cheap, cheaply peiced together instrument. The fret markers are plugs that are driven into the board to hide screws, however they protrude far enough that it touches a few of the strings. The srings don't sound like their ringing the way they should, so I'm planning to switch them out. When it came right out of the box, the strings look like they were hapharzardly wounded and there was white crap all over the back of the body.
So bottom line? Don't purchase this particular guitar or anything that resembles it. As a matter of fact the guitar I got does not resemble the guitar that's shown here. Will I return it? I don't know. I'm a tinkerer, so maybe I can get it to work properly. We'll see. I bought one of these years ago on eBay - some Chinese company makes them in a variety of colors, and doesn't give eBay sellers very good advice on the product. Mine was $20 and blue. It's not a dulcimer, restringing it doesn't make it one (that assertion came out of my discussions with the seller about the thing he sent me :-), they don't offer the strings to string it as a dulcimer anyway, and it doesn't do dulcimer stuff. It's a guitar, no more, no less.
As a cheap guitar that you don't worry about leaving in your car trunk so you've always got a guitar handy, it's fine. The sound's weak and a bit muddy, but a real Martin Backpacker sounds a bit muddy also. You can have fun with it, and you might or might not like it better than a traditional-shaped small guitar (this same Amazon store sells some half-sized blue guitars, for instance, which will probably give you a bit more sound.) |
